Teen smuggles cash into Westgate

A 19-year-old woman has admitted smuggling cash into Westgate for her prisoner boyfriend.

Daja-Nae Smith, of Warwick, appeared in Magistrates’ Court this morning.

She confessed to sneaking a prohibited article, $75, into the jail during a visit at 2.30pm on September 12.

Prosecutor Maria Sofianos told the court a prisoner officer watched Smith give the inmate, Bryce Daniels, a lengthy goodbye hug, during which the prisoner reached into a jacket she had tied around her waist.

The officer then saw something in Daniels’s hand and a search found him in possession of $75.

“I’m sorry for what I did,” Smith said. “I know it was dumb. I wouldn’t normally mean to do something stupid like that, I’m sorry.”

Duty counsel Javone Rogers asked the court for leniency in the form of a conditional discharge, describing Smith, a student, as a naive young woman.

“She works as a bartender and goes to college,” he said. “A conviction would have a significant adverse effect on her future.”

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner adjourned the case to November 26 so a social enquiry report could be compiled.

Smith was released on $2,000 bail.
