School and event closures
Government schools will open tomorrow — but the Island’s private schools are closed, according to the Bermuda Independent School Association, which cited hurricane risks.
This means that The Bermuda High School, Saltus Grammar School, Mount Saint Agnes Academy, Warwick Academy, Somersfield Academy and The Bermuda Institute will have a long hurricane weekend — and will assess their buildings after Gonzalo to see if school is safe to open on Monday.
Bermuda College is closing early, at 1pm.
Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre said it would close early on Thursday afternoon and those with appointments should call 236-1001 to reschedule.
The Centre’s annual Fish Fry on Friday has been postponed until Friday, November 14, at 4.30pm. Tickets will be honoured on the new date.
A decision on whether to hold the BF&M Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on Wednesday, October 22, will be made after the weekend.
Meanwhile, the Gilbert and Sullivan’ Society of Bermuda’s performance of Pirates of Penzance at City Hall will go ahead tomorrow night but will be cancelled on Friday.
Two shows are being scheduled for Saturday and another matinee is due to be added on Sunday at 3pm.
A five-kilometre road race scheduled for Sunday has been rescheduled due to tomorrow’s anticipated arrival of Gonzalo.
The event, the Argus Crime Stoppers 5k Road Race and Walk, will now be held on Sunday, November 30.

Dog shows planned for this weekend have also been cancelled by the Bermuda Kennel Club.
Club chairman Carole Havercroft said the group would not be able to get judges safely to the Island and that the BKC hoped to reschedule them for shows in the spring of next year.
The Menuhin Foundation said lessons and orchestras would not be held tomorrow, Friday or Saturday due to school closures.
The Weekend Film Series has postponed the screening of three films due to the threat posed by Hurricane Gonzalo.
The Trip to Italy, scheduled for tomorrow, will screen on a date still to be determined.
Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People and My Old Lady, scheduled for Sunday October 19, will now be screened on Sunday, October 26 at 3pm and 5.15pm, respectively.
