Trio attend global crime forum in South Africa
Three people from Bermuda are representing the Island at a major global crime forum in South Africa.
The trio are members of Crime Stoppers Bermuda and attending the 35th Crime Stoppers International Conference in Cape Town — the first time the event has been held in Africa.
Alex MacDonald, president of Crime Stoppers International and an executive board member of Crime Stoppers Bermuda, yesterday met Archbishop Desmond Tutu at the event.
Archbishop Tutu, a renowned social rights activist, addressed delegates and offered a prayer, said Bermuda representative Trudie Ottolini. Crime Stoppers Bermuda’s David Carruthers also attended the conference.
“We were truly honoured by the attendence of the Archbishop, who graced us with a short speech and a prayer,” Ms Ottolini said.
The conference opened on Sunday and closes today. Topics being discussed included trafficking, crimes against women and children, environmental crime, financial crimes and the illegal wildlife trade.
