Amid the chaos of Sunday morning’s tumultuous winds and driving rain one family was celebrating a very special arrival.

Little Conor Patrick Lim was born weighing a healthy 7lb 6oz as Tropical Storm Fay tore up trees and ripped off roofs. But for his parents, Bruce Lim and Zoe Hanson, the drive to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital was surprisingly quiet.

Mr Lim told The Royal Gazette: “There was quite a bit of debris and palm branches on the road so we presumed that the storm had already been through.

“We thought we had really cut a break in missing it, and the journey to the hospital was pretty quiet. The only problem we had was getting the right entrance; we had not realised we had to go through the new emergency department to get to maternity.”

Conor was born at 3.45am on Sunday, just a few hours before the worst of the storm hit the Island.

His birth was so quick that he was delivered by the midwife before the doctor arrived.

Ms Hanson and her new son were able to leave hospital on Monday and return to their home in Hamilton.

Mr Lim added: “It was only when the nurse opened the shutters after Conor had been born that we realised the storm was raging outside.

“We could see the trees being blown sideways, but we had not even noticed what was going on outside until we looked. There was a great sense of relief after Conor arrived and our midwife, Andrea Park, did an amazing job.”
