Drivers take to the road during storm

Driving remains hazardous while the eye of the storm passes over the Island

A motorist was apparently spotted driving as Hurricane Gonzalo was reaching its peak — despite safety warnings to stay indoors.

Governor George Fergusson shared on Twitter at about 7.30pm that a colleague had spotted someone drive by 20 minutes before.

“Colleague saw someone drive past house 20 mins ago. Reckless in extreme. Please heed advice of Premier & EMO to stay indoors during storm’s eye,” Mr Fergusson tweeted.

A car was also spotted on Dundonald Street during the storm’s eye, and a motorcyclist was seen driving in Hamilton near Court Street.

People across the Island reported seeing residents out walking during the eye.

Emergency services urge residents to stay inside until the Emergency Measures Organisation gives the all-clear.

Bermuda Police Service said CCTV footage was showing people outside.

“Currently we are experiencing the eye of Hurricane Gonzalo,” a spokeswoman said. “Although it may appear to be calm and that the worst is over, we would like to remind everyone that this is the calm before the hurricane intensives again.

“We see persons on CCTV walking around the Island and we do not wish for anyone to be caught off guard by the false safety of the calm before the hurricane.”

The Emergency Measures Organisation also appealled to people to stay in their homes.

“There are reports of persons venturing around the Island and we do not wish for anyone to be caught off guard,”? a spokeswoman said.
