Island coming through eye of storm

The eye of Gonzalo is passing us

The Island is coming through the eye of the storm and Gonzalo is transitioning to a strong Category 2 hurricane,

Bermuda Weather Service director Kimberley Zuill said there had been frequent gusts of “110 knots across the Island” — about 127 miles per hour.

“Wind sensors on the runway [of the airport] have gone down, Harbour Radio sensors have gone down,” she told the Emergency Broadcast Station just after 10pm. “Sensors at St David’s Lighthouse, the Causeway and Commissioner’s Point [remain].”

Ms Zuill said that after the eye we would experience the “same strength we were seeing”.

“We’re a little more than halfway through,” she added. “The back end won’t last as long but we had a little bit of delay, we expected the centre to pass around 8pm but really it was more like 9.30pm.

“Don’t go outside, this is usually a time when people think they can go outside and assess damage but end up getting injured because they get caught out in rapidly intensifying conditions.”
