Hurricane Gonzalo is now more than 300 miles away from the Island, according to Bermuda Weather Service’s noon update.

The storm is now a Category One and heading north-northeast at 25 miles per hour.

“Westerly winds will continue to decrease with mainly dry conditions for the rest of today,” the forecast states. “This will help greatly in restoration efforts. Rough seas persist, with 10-15ft seas today decreasing 8-12ft overnight.”

Large, dangerous swells are still being felt.

The National Hurricane Centre’s 11am update said Gonzalo should become an extratropical cyclone in about a day and that tropical storm conditions were possible in Newfoundland by late tonight and early tomorrow.

After a lull during the eye between about 9.30-10.30pm last night, strong winds again battered Bermuda as the Island faced the second half of Hurricane Gonzalo.

According to the US-based National Hurricane Centre, as of midnight the centre of the Category 2 storm was about 35 miles north-east of the Island.
