Rising winds and increasing swells
Strong winds and driving rain started to lash homes along Harrington Sound by 4pm.
Heavy swells battered the shore and trees bent over as the winds picked up in earnest.
Steady winds were estimated to be 38 miles per hour with 50mph gusts, according to the Bermuda Weather Service.
With Hurricane Gonzalo nearing, as of 5.30pm a Smith’s resident reported “strengthening winds and driving rain” battering the South Shore.
“The force of the approaching weather system is sending palm trees bending backwards and debris flying as Gonzalo comes within 100 miles of the Island.
“Parts of Smith’s parish around the Saucos Hill area have, while many parts of the island have lost electricity.
“In the last couple of hours swell under the dark grey sky off the South Shore has increased significantly.”
