Repeat offender imprisoned for wine theft

Magistrate Archibald Warner

A man who stole a $13 bottle of wine from a gas station has been jailed for ten days.

Repeat offender Dimetri Robinson, 36, who was on probation, pleaded guilty to theft at Magistrates’ Court this morning.

He admitted to stealing a $12.89 bottle of Pinot Grigio from the 24-hour gas station on Richmond Road, Pembroke, yesterday morning.

A co-accused, Robinson’s wife Santokh Sandhu-Hunt, 60, pleaded not guilty and the Crown did not pursue the charge against her.

Prosecutor Cindy Clarke told the court that police were alerted to the gas station at about 10.25am after the panic button was set off.

She said CCTV footage showed Robinson taking the bottle and placing it in his wife’s bag, then leaving without paying.

Ms Clarke added that Robinson had a string of previous convictions.

“I’m sorry, Your Honour,” Robinson told Magistrate Archibald Warner. “I’m sorry for what I’ve done; it was stupid.”

Robinson said that he and his wife had no home and were “bouncing around from guest house to guest house”.

He said: “I’m looking for places to stay and looking for a job; I haven’t had a job in four years. Now I’m in this stupid mess and messing myself up again.”

Robinson confirmed that he had not been in contact with his probation officer.

“I really don’t want to hear your sob stories,” Mr Warner replied. “You’ve been put on probation so you can be given the full support of the state. You’ve refused to take advantage of it; that’s why I have this attitude to you.

“We’ve done everything to help you by putting you in touch with the relevant agencies. You just want to get drunk and get into trouble.”

Mr Warner said that he could “stabilise” Robinson by sending him to Westgate Correctional Facility, where his probation officer could reach him, and imprisoned him for ten days.
