Honour for Clyde Best
Clyde Best Lane becomes official at high noon today outside of Somerset Cricket Club.
The renowned footballer, along with Wayne Scott, the Community, Culture and Sports Minister Wayne Scott, will join a ceremony commemorating the stretch of Broome Street as his own, at the club’s behest.
Rain or shine, the designation of Clyde Best Lane will go ahead outside of the club, followed by some refreshments indoors.
According to club president Alfred Maybury, it will be a solid afternoon of activities and football games, leading up to a league match between Somerset Trojans and Hamilton Parish.
The name change celebrates Mr Best’s Somerset roots, along with his distinguished sporting career that covered an era in which he played professionally in England and served as a pioneer for black footballers.
