Two men cleared of attempted murder

A jury has found two men not guilty of attempted murder following a month-long Supreme Court trial

Devon Hewey, 26, was found not guilty by a unanimous verdict this afternoon of attempting to murder Lavon Thomas in the early hours of March 24, 2012, as well as using a firearm.

Several hours later his co-defendant, 31-year-old Cervio Cox was found not guilty by a majority of nine to two on both counts.

The Supreme Court heard during their trial that Mr Thomas was leaving Shine’s Nightclub when two men on a motorcycle drove past and opened fire. Mr Thomas ran to the other side of the road and down a set of stairs to Front Street while gunshots shattered two windows in Seon Place.

The accused allegedly attempted to leave the scene by racing up Cavendish Road, but turned around upon seeing a marked police car.

The Crown has alleged that Mr Hewey was riding the motorcycle involved in the attack, while Julian Washington, who was acquitted of the shooting in a previous trial, was the gunman.
