Firefighters help city get in holiday spirit
Firefighters flocked to City Hall this afternoon to aid with a holiday emergency: the decorating of Hamilton’s Christmas tree.
Chief Fire Officer Lloyd Burchall and Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service’s mascot, Sparky the Fire Dog, joined Donal Smith, the Deputy Mayor of Hamilton, to hang baubles on the highest branches of the 35-foot festive tree, using the service’s ladder vehicle.
Other firefighters were also present at City Hall between 11am and 2pm to chat to the public about their service, provide fire safety tips and offer free blood pressure screenings.
The event was held to mark the final day of Fire Safety Week, which launched on Monday.
This year’s theme was “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives, Test Yours Today”, with a series of public events to raise awareness, as well as school visits and tours of the Island’s fire stations.
The Fire Service also presented prizes yesterday to the winners of its poster and essay competition at the recreation hall of Hamilton Fire Station.
