Man banned 18 months for drink driving
A Pembroke man stopped by Police after being spotted speeding on Woodlands Road has been disqualified for drink driving.
Kanti Furbert, 36, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court this morning to a single count of driving while impaired.
According to Senior Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney, officers were on duty at about 3.10am on November 21, when they saw a vehicle driven by Furbert travelling at high speed along Woodlands Road in Pembroke.
They followed the vehicle north along the road and saw it veer across the centre line on several occasions before turning on to St John’s Road at the roundabout without indicating.
Police stopped the vehicle and spoke with Furbert. While he told officers that he had not been drinking, they noticed that he appeared unsteady on his feet, his eyes were glazed and he smelled strongly of intoxicants.
Furbert was taken to Hamilton Police Station, where he provided a breath sample for analysis. The test revealed that he had 196mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, more than double the legal limit of 80mg.
After pleading guilty, Furbert said that he had been “stupid” to drive on the morning of the incident.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Furbert $1,200 and disqualified him from driving all vehicles for 18 months.
