Former Bermuda counsel becomes Cayman judge
Former Bermuda Crown counsel Robin McMillan has been sworn in as a judge in the Cayman Islands.
Mr McMillan will serve as an acting judge in the family, general civil and criminal divisions, according to reports from Caribbean News Now!
He began hearing cases in the dependent territory’s Grand Court yesterday.
Mr McMillan, who specialises in international commercial litigation, insolvency trusts, company law, judicial review and public law, had been a senior government prosecutor in Bermuda, where he worked on several high-profile cases.
He also worked in Hong Kong before becoming Crown counsel for the Government of the Cayman Islands.
After two years as Crown counsel in the Caribbean island group, he joined Appleby — then Hunter & Hunter — where he worked on the official liquidation of BCCI, the now defunct Bank of Credit and Commerce International.
Contacted about his move to the bench, Mr McMillan said yesterday that while he could not comment on the appointment, he could say: “I remain very fond of Bermuda and Bermudians and I visit Bermuda regularly, usually at Christmas time.
“I continue to have close and valued friends and colleagues there, including very long-time acquaintances.”
After his swearing in as a judge in Georgetown, the islands’ capital, he said: “I am honoured to have been appointed as an acting Grand Court judge and I very much look forward to serving the people of the Cayman Islands.”
