Man, 59, dies in house blaze
A 59-year-old man died after smoke and flames swept through a Paget property on Saturday night.
Richard Perry was rushed to hospital after being rescued by firefighters from his Bostock Hill West home, but later sadly died from his injuries.
The cause of the blaze, which broke out at about 11.15pm on Saturday, is still under investigation.
But a Police spokesman said that the circumstances surrounding the fire were “not suspicious”.
“It is anticipated that the findings of the completed investigation will be released in due course,” said the spokesman.
“Preliminary inquiries suggest the circumstances are not suspicious. However, a full investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing by the Criminal Investigation Unit, in consultation with the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service.”
Firefighters were called to the Paget property after smoke and fire were seen billowing from the residence. Mr Perry was found in an “unresponsive state” when crews gained entry into the lower apartment and carried him out of the room.
He was rushed to hospital via ambulance but pronounced dead at 11.56pm.
Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman, Sergeant Russann Francis, said: “The Fire Service responded to the incident with four vehicles and ten personnel.
“Two firefighters dressed in breathing apparatus rescued one person from the residence prior to extinguishing the fire.
“The fire, which was contained to a single room, was extinguished with one 1.5-inch hose line.
“There was minor smoke and heat damage throughout the residence.”
A Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to assist Mr Perry’s family.
