The Bermuda Sloop Foundation has received a $25,000 donation courtesy of two local companies, plus mentoring for ten middle school students to sail on the training vessel Spirit of Bermuda.

The donation came from reinsurers Guy Carpenter and Marsh.

Staff volunteered to mentor the students on four full-day voyages aboard the Spirit, running today through Wednesday. During the trips, students work alongside their mentors and learn about responsibility, collaboration and other skills that are essential not only for sailing, but for a lifetime of achievements. They also gain an appreciation for the Island’s maritime heritage.

David Ezekiel, country corporate officer of Marsh & McLennan Companies, Bermuda and chairman of Marsh’s Bermuda charity committee, called the trips an exceptional experience for both students and colleagues. Sailing is a proven means of self-development, while working with a mentor allows students the chance to spend one-on-one time with an adult and learn about their career.

“What these students learn during one day of sailing, combined with working with a mentor and understanding how the skills they learn on a sailing ship can be applied to their lives at home, school and eventually in a career, can’t be matched in a classroom,” said Diana Martine, chief executive officer of the Bermuda Sloop Foundation.

“This is a dynamic learning opportunity and we are thrilled that Marsh and Guy Carpenter are continuing to support this initiative with the Bermuda Sloop Foundation.”
