Bus driver shortage issues discussed

An “unusually high” number of sick days that has disrupted bus service prompted the Bermuda Industrial Union to call a meeting with Transport Ministry officials on Wednesday.
Sick days at the Department of Public Transportation were discussed with Shawn Crockwell, Transport Minister, and BIU president Chris Furbert, to create a plan to mitigate inconvenience to the public.
Nine bus drivers are out on long-term sick leave, and the Department has banned overtime — both of which hit the scheduling of bus runs.
A spokeswoman added that some runs will have delays as well as “some” cancellations in the weeks ahead, but no major disruption was expected. Officials were confident that the issue would be resolved.
