Community anger over dumping
“We are not taking this any more.”
That is the message from St George’s MP Kenneth Bascome after the parish was subjected to a fresh spree of illegal dumping.
Mr Bascome told The Royal Gazette that he was hoping to erect a camera overlooking the monument on Barry Road after couches, chairs, a television and other household debris was abandoned at the historical memorial.
He also called on those responsible for dumping truckloads of household goods and rubbish on the old Club Med site to “have some respect for your country”.
“We seem to have been plagued by illegal dumping in recent times,” said Mr Bascome. “It is not acceptable and we have had enough of it.
“I hope that if a camera is installed at the monument it would deter these thoughtless people from discarding their rubbish in such a way.
“It’s the second time that people have targeted this spot and left rubbish and old household goods on the site.
“It’s time we did something about it and had a bit more respect for our country.”
The old Club Med site has remained unused since the hotel was demolished in August 2008.
Since the property was left vacant, it has repeatedly been the scene of illegal dumping.
Work on a St Regis hotel project on the site is expected to begin in May, according to Tourism Development Minister Shawn Crockwell.
Mr Bascome said: “More often than not it takes community or charity efforts to clean up the mess that these people leave.
“It’s not acceptable that we treat our environment in this way and we need to start tackling this problem.
“I hope that the two spots that have recently been targeted are cleaned up soon, but we cannot rely on people’s goodwill and charity to get the job done.”
