The development of Morgan’s Point into a luxury hotel resort will provide job opportunities for Bermudians and Bermudian companies, according to Craig Christensen. The president and CEO of Morgan’s Point Ltd told The Royal Gazette that the resort would also require as many as 300 employees to run the day-to-day operations. He said he hoped that the first phase of the work — which includes the construction of the 84-room boutique hotel, spa, restaurant, amenities, marina and 35 residences — would be up and running by the beginning of 2017, in time for the America’s Cup.There is also the potential for an additional 112 residences to be built in the next stage of the project.“We see Morgan’s Point leading the resurgence of tourism in Bermuda,” Mr Christensen said. “The phrase I have used is, ‘Get ready for the rescue’.“The construction phase will provide job opportunities to Bermudian companies and Bermudians, although we cannot put a percentage on that at the moment. We have to satisfy the planners, the brand and Government that we have appropriately qualified companies to perform the work that needs to be done at Morgan’s Point, and we have to look at cost and performance to get that done.“Once the first phase is completed, the resort will need a staff of between 275 and 300 to perform the day-to-day operations.“We have got to create a long-term, sustainable product which will employ people for the next 50 to 100 years.“The priority now is to get it built and build it quickly.”Mr Christensen was speaking after a public meeting on Tuesday night at Dalton E Tucker School to outline plans for the luxury resort.Developers will submit their plans next month to the Department of Planning for the first phase of construction and they hope to break ground in June.“We hope to have the first phase of work completed by the very early part of 2017 in time for the America’s Cup later in the year,” Mr Christensen said.“We have a great deal of work to do and we have already assembled a great team to get the work done.“We felt the public meeting went very well last night and we are very pleased with the response we have received so far.“Never before have we been in a more critical situation of having to get a hotel operational in a sustainable fashion than right now.“It is critical for Bermuda’s future and we need the support of the Bermudian people.”
