A significant collapse of rock along North Shore in Hamilton Parish threatens to undermine a section of the popular Railway Trail, according to walkers.

“It had to be two weeks ago — I walk through here every day, and it looks like it’s dangerously close,” said area resident Andre Tucker.

He pointed to a fresh rock slide along the shorelines where further cracks are opening in the cliff face above the fallen boulders.

“I was talking to the guys from Parks to see if anybody was going to look into it and see if it’s going to undermine the path.”

The collapse occurred close to Sandy Hole, east of the Clear View guest house. A Parks team was busy in the area yesterday, cutting down invasive plants such as Mexican Pepper, to prevent them from weakening the rocks further. The fall occurred in an area of downward sloping strata, meaning the stone can more easily collapse.

The rockfall is near Winton Hill, where Public Works has proposed building a tunnel to protect Trail users from another unstable cliff face.
