Alpha Phi Alpha gets ‘Alpha Week’ started
The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity (Epsilon Theta Lambda Chapter) held its annual symposium yesterday as guests of Menspeak.
Entitled “Diversity in Leadership”, the symposium focused on the issue: “Has the glass ceiling been broken or merely cracked? Re-examining gender/race/age/sexual orientation in regards to Leadership”.
Topics for the evening covered a diverse landscape of leadership-focused questions in the areas of technology, business, spirituality, race, education, sexuality and a clutch of general questions. Panellists included Craig Bridgewater, Kim Caines, Chen Foley, Jason Hayward, Jessica Mello, Cordell Riley, Reverend Nicholas Tweed, Marlon Williams and, joining by way of video conference, Christie Hunter-Arscott.
The event was attended by more than 110 persons who interacted throughout the symposium via a live feed, offering their thoughts and comments to the discussion. This proved to be a great addition to this year’s symposium, as moderator Dwayne Caines was able to incorporate some of the comments as additions to his original questions.
“We the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, Epsilon Theta Lambda Chapter, would like to thank the panellists for their time and commitment, and for bringing insight and prospective to this year’s symposium,” a spokesman for the fraternity said. “We would also like to thank the audience for attending and listening to a topic which is becoming quite relevant not only globally, but here in Bermuda. Finally, we would like to thank the Bermuda College and Menspeak for allowing us to partner with them once again and hosting a successful event.”
The symposium was the first of three events for “Alpha Week” this week. A leadership breakfast will be held on Friday at St Paul’s AME Church hall, where more than 100 male high school students will interact with various professional men from the community. Alpha Week culminates with the Black & Gold Gala, which will be held on Saturday at The Fairmont Southampton.
