‘Earth Hour Ambassadors’ wanted for Saturday

The environmental sustainability event Earth Hour, set for Saturday at 8.30pm, has its own Earth Hour Council to organise this year’s event.

The hour of darkened lights, supported by a “glow walk” through the streets of Hamilton, is promoted by the charity Greenrock, which has teamed with the council this week to speak with teachers and students to garner support.

“In order to truly succeed in this mission, we need Earth Hour Ambassadors from all walks of life to promote the cause and speak to the importance of making a change not only for us, but for future generations to come,” a Greenrock spokesman said.

As well as creating their own teams to join in the costumed 5km trek through Hamilton’s streets, students are being encouraged to set up their own “Green Teams” to introduce new sustainable practices at their schools.

“The Earth Hour Council also hopes to get local businesses on board. Too often, building lights are unnecessarily left on throughout the evening and coffee makers are left plugged in,” the spokesman added.

“For this one hour on March 28th, all Bermuda businesses are urged to make their own statement by powering down their office to signal their participation and belief in the cause.”
