Special waste drop-off reminder

The Ministry of Public Works will hold its semi-annual Special Waste Drop-Off event today and Saturday.

A spokeswoman said: “Residents are encouraged to bring compact fluorescent light bulbs, old pesticides, hobby chemicals, outdated medicines or anything else with a hazardous or warning label to the Tynes Bay Waste to Energy plant on Palmetto Road, Devonshire, between 9am and 4pm.

“The Bermuda community should understand that special waste items can present a health risk for waste collections staff if it is put into the regular household garbage.

“Through the ministry’s comprehensive waste management plan, all special waste items are sent overseas for safe disposal and, whenever possible, recycling. These methods of waste management benefits Bermuda by keeping us safe from potential environmental hazards and benefits the planet by reusing or recycling the end product.”
