Campaigners outside Parliament demand clarity
Supporters of the People’s Campaign wore red this morning as they gathered outside the House of Assembly, with about 80 people in attendance by the time Parliament reconvened at 10am.
The atmosphere was quiet and cordial as Premier Michael Dunkley arrived shortly before the opening of the House, which has resumed today after breaking in March.
The group has resolved to keep vigil outside Sessions House throughout the sitting of Parliament.
The People’s Campaign has demanded accountability over the development proposal for the LF Wade International Airport — charging that a mass of e-mails, published online this week, show tainted dealings with the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) and the contractor Aecon that was chosen for the job.
Finance Minister Bob Richards has maintained that nothing untoward took place during the discussions with CCC and Aecon, telling The Royal Gazette that he had not known of Aecon until a June 4, 2014 meeting in Toronto, which was brokered through the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.
The Progressive Labour Party has called for Mr Richards to resign over the agreement with the CCC, charging that Aecon’s selection was a backroom deal. The matter will come up for debate during today’s session.
