Men banned from the road
A pair of men arrested on the same morning for drinking and driving offences were today banned from the roads.
Both 36-year-old Franklyn Pearman, from Pembroke, and 28-year-old Levar Darrell, from Southampton, appeared in Magistrates’ Court this morning charged with driving while impaired.
The court heard that at around 12.50am on July 18, officers were conducting traffic stops on Middle Road in Warwick when they encountered Darrell, who was riding through the area on a motorcycle.
Darrell reportedly rode past one officer directing him to pull over, but complied when signalled by a second officer.
The officers asked him why he had not pulled over when first instructed, and when he answered they noticed that his breath smelled of alcohol and his voice was slurred.
Asked if he had been drinking, he said that he had two beers and was subsequently arrested. He later provided officers with a sample of breath, with the lower reading showing he had 189mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood — more than double the legal limit of 80mg.
A few hours later, at around 5.30am, officers were on duty on Par-la-Ville Road in Pembroke when they saw a motorcycle travelling south, swerving across the road with its headlights off.
The officers stopped the vehicle — which was ridden by Pearman — and noticed that his breath smelled strongly of intoxicants. Asked if he had been drinking, Pearman said he had some swizzle, black rum and a beer.
He later agreed to a breath test, which showed a lower reading of 149mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood.
Appearing in court this morning, Darrell pleaded guilty to driving while over the legal blood-alcohol limit, while Pearman pleaded guilty to the charge of driving while impaired.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined both men $1,200, banning them from driving all vehicles for a period of 18 months.
