A popular Pembroke playground left damaged after last year’s hurricanes has new equipment for the Island’s children.

Craig Cannonier, the Minister of Public Works, thanked Horsfield Landscaping for their assistance, along with the Department of Parks, as he cut the ribbon yesterday on the play complex.

Mr Cannonier said it was a well-liked spot for the Island as well as the adjacent community, recalling that he had used to bring his own children to the swings there.

Vandalism has remained “a challenge” for the roadside park, where the bathrooms remain out of commission. Mr Cannonier said they would be repaired in due course. Portable bathrooms are in place at the western end of the park.

The gazebo, destroyed during Hurricanes Fay and Gonzalo in October, has yet to be replaced and the ground near the complex remains stony in places, but the minister said: “There is still more work to be done. Parks is on top of it — they know the work they need to do.”

Mr Cannonier was joined for the unveiling by Jameka Smith, park planner for the department.
