Tourist dies in snorkelling incident
A tourist died following a snorkelling incident in waters off Hawkins Island yesterday.
The man, a 56-year-old passenger on the Norwegian Breakaway, was spotted in an unresponsive state in the water at about 3.45pm.
He was lifted to a private vessel, and then on to a Police Marine boat, before being transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital by ambulance. However he was pronounced dead at 4.44pm.
A Bermuda Police Service spokesman said: “First responders attended to a report of an incident that took place in the waters around Hawkins Island at around 3.46pm yesterday.
“Details surrounding this incident are sketchy at this point but it appears that a 56-year-old man, a visitor on board the Norwegian Breakaway, was snorkelling with a group, when he was noticed in an unresponsive state in the water.
“He was lifted to a private vessel where they met up with a Police Marine boat and taken to an awaiting ambulance to KEMH. However, at 4.44pm the man was pronounced dead. No further information will be given until the next of kin has been notified.”
