BTC reports minimal damage

Robin Seale

BTC has reported “minimal disruption” to service following hurricane Joaquin with only isolated issues caused by damage to some overhead cables.

BTC is expecting full service recovery to normal levels today as is its sister company Digicel.

Care experts at the company’s St John’s call centre said they received a few more calls than normal from customers with the field engineer experts having scrambled together early this morning to identify and resolve issues promptly.

Detailed assessments are ongoing for any subsequent risks, such as damage to power cabinets, with emergency generators on standby to ensure there is no later interruption to network services.

BTC will continue to work alongside Belco to aid restoration of power affecting shared services and to complete additional preventive maintenance.

This will require some temporary power shut downs to ensure safe working conditions and BTC customers should be advised these planned outages will result in limited ongoing network disruption.

Chief executive officer of Digicel and BTC Robin Seale said: “With over a hundred years of experience delivering communications for Bermuda, the BTC team are well versed in the impact of heavy weather and how to make sure things keep running.

“We are extremely pleased to report very minor damage thus far and would like to thank our hardworking staff for the dedication that they have shown in preparation for and rapid response following Joaquin. This time around we have been boosted by being able to pool resources across BTC and Digicel as well as having a joined up plan with the excellent team at Belco to restore any power outages.”
