A pair of Saltus Grammar School students has started building wooden replica models of the catamarans that will be used in the 35th America’s Cup.

Aiden Young and Jamie Sanders, who are both in secondary year two, have completed the hulls of an AC45 and expect to finish the project this term by fitting the mast, sails and rigging to scale.

According to Mike Hooper, the school’s design technology technician, it is one of two America’s Cup-related projects.

He said that design technology teacher Patrick Mahon is working on a graphic design project with students from year seven.

As part of the curriculum for that year, the students will create sail designs for model versions of the AC45s.

At the conclusion of the project, the designs will be judged by America’s Cup team members.

Saltus also recently welcomed students whose families are staying in Bermuda for the America’s Cup.

Jon Beard, the deputy head and director of advancement, said the event was having a marked impact on the school.

“Everyone is very aware of the America’s Cup and very much looking forward to seeing the boats in action this month as well as in 2017,” he said.

“It is also proving to be an excellent teaching tool for the students.”
