New Greenrock role for Starling
Greenrock’s new executive director Jonathan Starling has said that social and economic sustainability will be an important factor in ensuring a healthy environment for future generations.
Mr Starling, a former aquarist with the Department of Conservation Services, started his new role at the environmental charity yesterday.
He is currently completing a PhD in urban studies with a focus on environmental justice from Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh, where he also earned an MSc in urban and regional planning.
Mr Starling told The Royal Gazette: “The challenge of sustainability is one of the great challenges of our time, not just in Bermuda but globally.
“There are a lot of challenges, but also a lot of opportunities out there, and I encourage anyone interested to reach out to us. While sustainability is about making sure our environment is healthy for current and future generations, it also involves social and economic sustainability, making sure these are also healthy for current and future generations. All three are connected and cannot really be separated from each other.
“While there is a lot to do, each one of us can play a role, no matter how small, be it simply using a reusable bag for shopping (not just for groceries) or getting involved actively with us to make a difference.”
A Greenrock spokesman said in the charity’s latest newsletter: “Jonathan has outstanding qualifications for the role, with hands-on experience with Bermuda’s natural environment.
“We believe he has the skills, experience and qualifications to be an asset to Greenrock in this role.”
