Khrystian King, who is of Bermuda descent, was celebrating a victory yesterday in Worcester, Massachusetts after winning a seat at the city hall of New England’s second-biggest city.

Worcester’s municipal elections were held on Tuesday — with Mr King emerging triumphant as the lone fresh face in the administration of mayor Joseph Petty. The new councillor, who is said to have Bermudian family, likes to celebrate his local roots, sporting the Island’s flag prominently online.

A social worker and basketball coach, Mr King campaigned on his long experience of working with gangs and at-risk youth.

Gun-related gang violence has troubled the city, a traditional manufacturing centre.

According to the daily Telegram & Gazette, Mr King is “the youngest of three children of Bermudian immigrants” who came to attend nearby Atlantic Union College.

Mr King described himself as “honoured and humbled” to take on the position, which he will hold for the next two years.
