Late Olympian’s ‘grateful’ family help PALS
The family of the late Olympic sailor Reid Kempe have raised $6,000 for the cancer care charity PALS.
Mr Kempe passed away in August after a six-month battle with cancer.
He had been hoping to celebrate his upcoming 65th birthday on a party bus but his plans had to change when he became sick.
Mr Kempe passed away before his birthday but his family decided to stick with his intended theme and held a “virtual party bus”.
People were invited to “hop on board” and donate funds to the charity that cared for him during his final weeks.
His daughter Zoe told The Royal Gazette: “In a way we fulfilled his birthday wish and raised some money for a great charity.
“PALS is one of those charities you forget about until you are faced with it.
“People should try to keep them in the back of their minds all the time. We are forever grateful that PALS existed during our time of need.
“Daddy’s nurses were angels and provided such extensive daily care and loaned supplies and equipment at no charge.”
• The fund will remain open until Saturday. Anyone wishing to donate can do so by logging on to www.generosity.com/fundraisers/reid-s-65th-birthday-virtual-party-bus-fundraiser/x/8309932
