Bermudian students flocking to New England
Nearly 400 Bermudian students were studying in the United States this year, according to a new report.
The 2015 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange showed 387 Bermudians were studying in the States, making it the second most popular destination after Britain.
Published annually by the Institute of International Education in partnership with the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the report shows the number of international students at US colleges and universities increased ten per cent to a record high of 974,926 students in the 2014-15 academic year.
According to a press release, that is the highest figure in 35 years and almost 90,000 more than the previous year.
The top US host institutions for Bermudians are New England Institute of Technology, Johnson and Wales University, Barry University, and Flagler College. Florida hosts 19 per cent of Bermudian students, and Rhode Island hosts 11 per cent.
Consul General Mary Ellen Koenig stated: “Studying abroad is an excellent way for students to gain the international experience necessary to succeed in today’s global, borderless marketplace.
“I am encouraged by the number of Bermudian students studying in the United States and look forward to increasing that number over time, especially now that Bermuda College is an EducationUSA advising centre.”
The online EducationUSA Virtual College Fair for international youth takes place on Wednesday from 4am to 4pm Bermuda time.
