Programme to celebrate American links
The United States Consulate has rolled out a new networking programme for young people interested in current events and international relations.
Young Leaders Bermuda (YLB) is a local chapter of Young Leaders United Kingdom, an initiative launched by US ambassador to the UK Matthew Barzun to foster and celebrate the relationship between the nations. Through the organisation, Mr Barzun has hosted chats with influential Americans, which YLB members will be invited to participate in.
The chapter was formally launched on January 18 with a reception at the home of US Consul General Mary Ellen Koenig, who hailed the programme as a way to provide members with information about opportunities available to them in the US. So far 59 people aged between 16 and 30 have joined the group.
“YLB is a way to connect virtually — with each other, with the US Consulate here in Bermuda and the US Embassy in London, and with people that influence the world today,” Mrs Koenig said.
“YLB members will also have the opportunity to attend events hosted by the Consulate and connect in real life.
“There are no expectations of commitments of time — people are free to participate as much or as little as they wish in the activities that interest them.”
Since the programme’s launch, Mr Barzun has hosted a virtual chat with Yohannes Abraham, special assistant to President Barack Obama and Chief of Staff for the Offices of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs.
Future discussions will include Facebook vice-president Nicola Mendelsohn and David Plouffe, former campaign manager for President Obama and current CNN commentator.
The Consulate plans to have a number of programmes this year aimed at YLB, including a discussion on the upcoming US presidential elections and a discussion on summer work travel opportunities in the US for young Bermudians.
Those wishing to join YLB should send an e-mail to youngleadersbermuda@state.gov, including their name, e-mail address and school, non-government organisation or work affiliation.
