Celebrated actress Robin Wright is set to return to Bermuda next week in an effort to help spread awareness of the civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ms Wright, who has starred in films such as The Princess Bride and won Emmy Awards for her portrayal of Claire Underwood in House of Cards, has also served as an advocate for the people of the Congo.

The African nation has been embroiled in decades of war as armed groups battle for its valuable minerals, which are essential in the production of many popular electronic devices. Since 1996 more than 5.4 million Congolese have been killed in the fighting.

On February 16, Ms Wright is set to host a special Red Carpet Gala at Marcus’ to raise awareness of the Stand With Congo campaign, which is aimed at mobilising consumer and student activists and pressure policymakers.

A core element of the campaign is a planned 50-campus tour of the Mike Ramsdell documentary When Elephants Fight, which was financed by Bermuda residents.

Campaign director JD Stier said: “If we can remove the worst smugglers in Congo with policy pressure, there are many poised to fill that void with productive and powerful leadership. The time is now to stand with Congo and help build the nation all Congolese envision — one of peace, prosperity and with a viable future for their children.”

According to a spokesman, Ms Wright will be present to talk about her hopes for the region and how the campaign can make a lasting impact.
