A new weekly internet radio show is seeking to promote Bermuda’s top musical talents to the wider world.

Set to launch this month on WWWE AM 1100, the “DJ Meam presents Globalart Radio” hour-long programme will feature tracks by the best the island has to offer, along with old school hip-hop and R&B.

“We’d like to put out a clarion call to artists here so they can submit their music,” said Antoine Raynor, Globalart’s founder and media director.

“We want to give independent artists the same sort of support that a major label artist would have, so they can just worry about their music.

“Our goal is to get Bermudian artists noticed worldwide.”

Mr Raynor, 43, gradually moved from performing his own music into his role as a creative entrepreneur.

“I’ve always enjoyed the art, but I guess my practical side won over,” said the Bermuda native, who splits his time between here and New York. The more I learnt about the music industry, the more I realised that behind the scenes is where I wanted to be.”

And Mr Raynor is convinced that with the right amount of promotion and knowhow, the show can expand beyond its current time slot.

“We obviously have to build that base,” he said. “We’re pretty confident that when the steam starts to build, we can increase our output. But right now, it’s all about pushing artists through that hour-long medium.”

Asked what he thinks the island’s artists can offer, Mr Raynor said: “Bermuda’s musicians are very talented. Bermudians are in the process of finding their sound as well.

“A lot of young artists are experimenting with different beats like reggae and gombey, and putting their own spin on it, so it’s a fresh voice from a fresh region.”

DJ Meam is the alias of Bermudian presenter and music producer Eddie Glasford, who is currently based in Virginia as he studies audio engineering for a mentoring programme.

The Pembroke native, who wants to one day run his own record label and production company, said: “I’m hoping to create a Bermudian ambience on the show to promote the artists on a worldwide stage.

“We need a music industry in Bermuda. I’ve been trying to help create one in Bermuda, so musicians can actually make a living.”
