Saltus students go 3D

Saltus Grammar School students are putting their grand ideas to the test thanks to new 3D printer technology.

The school’s design technology and IT departments started a campaign to purchase the 3D printers, after pupils learned about their capabilities during a trip to Boston last year.

Having raised money through the Saltus Association and secured discounts from local business Tops Ltd, the school bought six machines.

Henry Durousseau, 15, has since designed a customised docking port for smart phones while Thomas Penruddocke, 16, used a printer to fashion a part for an America’s Cup model boat that he is building.

“The students have been amazing,” said Tina Fountain, head of creative digital technologies and business enterprise at Saltus.

“As a member of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, Thomas recognised the potential to promote 3D printing and is now working with the club to produce parts.

“Thomas hopes that his design skills will help the club and other sailors with parts that are not available locally.”

“We are going to see what other uses the 3D printers might have for the school as well,” Ms Fountain added.
