Immigration protesters to ‘show dismay’

A protest to “show dismay” to proposed immigration reform has been announced for tomorrow.

The event, which is scheduled to take place outside the Government Administration Building from noon, is the latest action against the Pathways to Status programme.

The event’s Facebook page states: “This gathering is to send a message to the OBA Government that the people of Bermuda will not be ignored.

“The current proposed legislation only addresses the issue of status. Status only gives one the right to vote. There are many more issues that need to be considered.

“We want people to come out tomorrow to show their disagreement with the legislation. We want the Government to take a step back and genuinely pursue comprehensive bipartisan immigration reform.”

Michael Fahy, the Minister of Home Affairs, announced this month that the Bermuda Government would introduce new pathways for long-term residents to apply for permanent residency or Bermudian status.

He described the move as one fuelled by economic and human rights concerns but critics say the plan is an effort by the One Bermuda Alliance to build its voter base.

Last week, protesters shut down a public information session on the subject, loudly chanting “no”. They have also briefly interrupted a sitting of the House of Assembly.
