Homes and businesses across Bermuda switched their lights off from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on Saturday night to mark Earth Hour.

Environmental charity Greenrock helped to organise a five-kilometre glow fun run and walk through Hamilton, as well as a night-time party at the Waterfront Properties Courtyard, to celebrate the sustainability initiative.

Twelve-year-old Lazai Outerbridge from Whitney Institute led the pack of approximately 300 people taking part in the glow fun run and walk.

He told The Royal Gazette: “This is my first time competing in Earth Hour. It’s a surprise to win and I feel good.”

Helen Clark, a PE teacher at Saltus Grammar School, finished fourth.

“Some friends and I competed for a bit of a laugh,” she said at the after-party, which featured fire dancers and face painting.

“It’s a fun event and it’s good to support anything that raises awareness of environmental causes.”

Mark Norman, 26, said that the event had provided a “good orientation” of the capital, after moving to Bermuda from England last week.

“I’m very conscious of the effect humans have on Earth,” he added, “and the atmosphere is great.”

Jonathan Starling, executive director of Greenrock, said that the event offered an excellent opportunity for the island to focus on an important global issue.

He explained that getting people to turn off their lights for an hour was a symbolic move.

“It’s supposed to make you think about the amount of energy that is wasted every day, plus switching the lights off when you leave a room saves you money,” he said.

Earth Hour originated in Sydney, Australia in 2007 and came to Bermuda the following year.
