Athletes invited to school presentation
Young athletes and their families have been invited to a presentation to provide information about St Benedicts Preparatory School in Newark, New Jersey.
Calvin Blankendal, CEO of the Bermuda Brazilian Football School, said he had invited the Newark-based school to participate in the recent Bermuda Triangle Cup and, while schedules did not align, they felt there was still an opportunity to inform interested members of the public about opportunities at the school.
“One of our former students had transferred to St Benedicts, so we wanted to bring down his team to be in the tournament but it was at late notice,” he said. “We are hoping to do it next time, but there was also an interest to get more Bermudians to the school, not just for soccer but also for academics.
“Our focus at BBFS has always been about the holistic side of football. We use that to engage them and facilitate positive things in their life.”
Assistant headmaster Michael Scanlan said while the school had been successful in its athletic programmes, its goal is to use sport and academics to turn young men into young leaders.
“We use athletics activities as vehicles to develop our values and teach kids to be leaders beyond the pitch,” he said. “It all starts with what they learn from athletics.”
The presentation will take place between 6pm and 7pm at the Centre of Philanthropy on Wesley Street this evening.
