Performance group to bring full cast
The educational and cultural exchange performers Up With People are on their way to Bermuda, and bringing their full cast for the first time in its 50-year history.
One hundred participants from 20 different countries are coming to perform later this month — and some are still looking for places to stay, Hamilton Rotary Club heard.
Cloé Bernier, the group’s promotional representative, and field tour manager Isaiah McGregory have spent the past month here setting up community projects and workshops with schools.
Up With People’s cast will perform their show, The Journey, starting on April 28 at the Ruth Seaton James Centre in CedarBridge Academy.
Several local organisations and businesses have agreed to become ticket sponsors, helping to cover the cost for local students who might not get a chance to see the show.
Up With People have also reached out to their local alumni, who have grown to a community of roughly 80 to 100 people.
“We build bridges in the communities we visit,” Ms Bernier said, recounting her own stay with a host family in Mexico.
“Embracing new cultures — that’s my favourite part of the experience.”
As well as school workshops on youth leadership and cultural diversity, the group will engage in “community action”, including a cleanup with Keep Bermuda Beautiful. “We don’t necessarily like to call it community service,” explained Mr McGregory. “We don’t go into a community to change it. Our goal is to spark interest and spark people into action.”
