Rocket launches that on occasion have been visible in Bermuda are to resume this evening from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Bermuda Maritime Operations nevertheless warned for the public to keep in mind that red marine distress flares should always be reported.

The launch to the International Space Station is the first in nine months by the company SpaceX, after a rocket failed and exploded in June.

The Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled to take off at 5.43pm Bermuda time.

While there is no guarantee that it will be visible from the island, the launches have been linked to reports of mystery lights in the past: in February 2015, Bermuda Maritime Operations received multiple calls that roughly coincided with a Falcon 9 launch.

A launch in January 2014 was spotted from Bermuda’s South Shore, as a slow moving light travelling from west to east.
