Bermuda will join countries around the world at the end of this month to celebrate International Girls in ICT Day when young women will be encouraged to follow a career path in Information and Communications Technologies.

The day, April 28, will see three events, including two student competitions, all organised by the Department of E-Commerce.

Dr Marisa Stones, Director of the Department of E-Commerce, said: “The community is invited to participate in our efforts to encourage, foster, and mentor our young women to consider ICT as a career path, to grow in the ICT industry, and to eventually take on leadership positions.

“Let us celebrate the inspiring ICT women who are in our midst.”

The public can nominate any woman who stands out in the Island’s ICT sector by e-mailing

(e-commerce@gov.bm), the name of a nominee, including the name of her organisation/employer, and her contact details.

Also required is a brief paragraph, clarifying the contribution the nominee is making in the ICT world.

Meanwhile, the Department has provided all primary schools with posters depicting internationally-recognised pioneers in the ICT industry. The schools have been asked to encourage their students to colour the poster and return the finished product by Friday, April 22 at 3pm.

Students in the island’s secondary schools are encouraged to produce a 30-second video clip in which they use ICT in “a creative and innovative way and which centres on girls and ICT in Bermuda.”

The winners of all three competitions will be announced on April 28 at the International Girls in ICT Day Celebration.

International Girls in ICT Day is celebrated globally on the fourth Thursday of April every year. The initiative is backed by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU)
