A father who assaulted the driver responsible for killing his daughter has walked free from court.

Dean Eve slapped Patrick Richardson across the face within the precincts of Supreme Court as Richardson was jailed for four years for causing the death of La-Nae Woodley by dangerous driving.

Mr Eve was arrested on Tuesday after the incident and taken to Hamilton Police Station.

This morning he was brought back to court to face contempt of court proceedings, which carry a maximum sentence of six months imprisonment.

Mr Eve apologised for his actions.

Asked by Puisne Judge Charles Etta Simmons whether he was sorry, Mr Eve replied: “I am now. Look where it got me.

“I apologise for the disruption to the court process and for striking Mr Richardson.”

Puisne Judge Simmons then let Mr Eve leave the court.

She said: “In the circumstances I will release you. In this case the court accepts your contrition and apology and so will take the process no further.”
