Roughly 160 people have been taken on for summer employment through this year’s day camp programme offered by the Bermuda Government.

Most will be college and university students whose primary field of study is child care, said Patricia Gordon-Pamplin, the Minister of Community, Culture and Sports.

All staff have been vetted, and will receive Scars training, as well as “hands-on experience for their own development”.

“The mission of the programme is to provide children with exciting, well-rounded recreational experiences,” the minister said. Activities on any given day range from sports to music, art, dance, multicultural events and day trips.

Registration for children aged 4 to 15 years will be held on May 6 at the National Sports Centre’s cricket pavilion from 5.30pm to 7pm.

Subsequent registrations will be accepted at the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation in the Craig Appin Building on Wesley Street.

The camps, which are government subsidised, carry a cost of $65 per week.

“Obviously our attempt is to keep costs as low and affordable as possible,” Ms Gordon-Pamplin said.

The camps, held at various government schools and the three community centres, will run from June 29 until August 5.

Health and safety standards are set by the Same Camps Bermuda Operations guidelines.

The preschool plus locations at Port Royal, Prospect Primary and Harrington Sound Primary School are named head start, fresh start and smart start, while primary school camps Chameleon, Hibiscus, Kiskadee, Pontoon and Bermudez will be at Sandys Community Centre, Prospect Primary School, Northlands Primary School, the Gilbert Institute and the St George’s Community Centre.

Teen camps Girls 2 Ladies and Boys 2 Men will be held at Hamilton Community Centre, and Paw-Paw will be hosted by CedarBridge Academy.
