Former Premier enjoys Obama’s comedy turn
Two Bermudian guests got treated to a grand presidential tradition on Saturday night in Washington: former premier Ewart Brown and his wife Wanda joined the laugher at president Barack Obama’s farewell White House correspondents’ dinner.
“It was amazing — just fantastic,” said Dr Brown of the address, which Mr Obama closed by dropping his mic, Chewstick style, with the declaration: “I just have two more words to say ... Obama out.”
The former Progressive Labour Party premier can be seen with his wife laughing during the presidential speech, in which Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump was one among the many skewered by the 44th president. Dr Brown told The Royal Gazette the quip that caught him laughing on camera was Mr Obama’s observation to Jake Tapper, CNN’s chief Washington correspondent, that he had “left journalism to go to CNN”.
“It was full of laughs and great observations,” he added. “At things like that, I like to see the faces of the people who are being targeted, just to see the reaction. There was a full variety of reactions.”
The annual dinner is an almost century-old tradition, offering a rare chance to mingle reporters with celebrities and other figures of prominence.
Dr Brown described it as particularly special given that he had been invited twice before and been unable to attend.
“This time I said, this is going to be Obama’s last; I might really enjoy it. And that I did,” he said.
