Community parties after win for Portugal
Spirits remained sky high among Bermuda’s Portuguese community yesterday, the day after their team triumphed in the Euro 2016 football final.
Portugal picked up their first-ever major trophy on Sunday after beating hosts France 1-0 in Paris, with substitute Éder scoring a long-range winner in extra time.
Cristiano Ronaldo also added to his sizeable career trophy haul, despite the distraught Real Madrid star being forced off in the 25th minute with a knee injury.
The win sparked scenes of mass jubilation in Bermuda, as fans partied into the night in Hamilton.
Come yesterday, cars around the island were still proudly sporting the European coastal nation’s flag in honour of their heroes.
Oliver Rego is the founder of Portuguese football supporters group the BDA Super Immigrants, Ultra Descendants & Devil Triangle Boys. The organisation started in 2000 and this year celebrated a decade of calling Docksiders Bar and Restaurant home.
“I’ve had higher hopes for Portugal in other tournaments, but this time it just felt different,” he said.
“The coach, Fernando Santos, I know well because he managed my club team FC Porto and we won five trophies in three seasons.
“He’s defensive-minded and knows how to break up an opposing team’s play. It’s not pretty football, but it’s effective.
“This team seemed more structured, and I’ve never seen a Portuguese side in which the players played so much for each other, rather than for themselves.”
Alicia Davis, a server at Café Acoreano, has family from the Azores.
“I thought that Portugal would do well — they seemed hungry enough for it,” she said.
“I felt horrible for Ronaldo when he got injured, because realistically it’s going to be his last European Championship.
“For him to get injured so soon into the game was just heartbreaking, whether you like him or not. He was vindicated at the end of the match though.”
Madonna Loring, a server at Beach Bistro, has grandparents from São Miguel in the Azores.
“I was so excited and overwhelmed when Portugal won. They deserved it,” she said.
“I placed a bet on Portugal winning the tournament, I won’t say how much though!
“It’s great for the Portuguese community here. The atmosphere last night was awesome, everyone was cheering for Portugal and people were dancing and having a good time at the Vasco da Gama Club.”
Berkeley Institute student Mia Williams Grant watched the game in the Azores during her grandmother’s 60th birthday.
“I was in a café bathroom when they won. I was so scared because I heard all the noise and when I came out everyone was jumping up and down and waving their flags,” she said. Fans celebrated by “blocking the streets with lots of dancing and screaming people, full of energy”, she said, adding: “It was the most amazing experience.”
