Wedding dream comes true
For one couple, getting married in Bermuda at Jobson’s Cove has been a “long-time dream”.
And yesterday that dream came true.
Paul, 48, and Natalie Johnson, 41, from Yorkshire, England, have been together for 17 years but the past five years have been tinged with sadness and uncertainty because of Mr Johnson’s illness.
He had a brain tumour diagnosed in 2011, just after one of his many trips to Bermuda, visiting his aunt Jennifer Terceira.
Then in 2015 he was struck with testicular cancer, chemotherapy was not working, and he had to get a major operation resulting in a huge scar on his stomach and a delay in their wedding plans.
“My first trip to Bermuda was 40 years ago, I fell in love with the island,” said Mr Johnson.
“I came again when I was 12 on my own and used to help my aunt her with the horses. I returned when I was 23, then decided to bring Natalie in 2010. It was then where we made a plan to come back and get married.
“I just love the friendliness of the people.
“Here you walk past people and they always say ‘good morning’, or ‘good afternoon’ or whatever.
“They always acknowledge you. That is amazing to me.”
Mrs Johnson added: “It’s like a different world over here. As soon as you get off the plane it’s completely different to what we know in England.”
The newlyweds met in 1999, in Sheffield, when Mr Johnson was a frequent patron at a bar where his new wife worked. She was told to never go out with a customer, but they went out for the first time that night.
Mr Johnson said: “I told her I’ll kiss you now before you go back into the club, if not I may not get a chance again — we’ve been together ever since.
“This wedding has been something we’ve been looking forward to for the last two years. We’ve been saving up, I’ve been off work so I planned the ceremony, all she had to do was get her dress.”
