A feature film with an all-star cast that includes Colin Firth and Jude Law, and an acclaimed documentary about the 18 African-American athletes who represented the United States at the 1936 Olympic Games, are to feature at the Weekend Film Series tomorrow.

Screening at 3pm at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, Genius also stars Nicole Kidman, Laura Linney, Guy Pearce and Dominic West.

The film is a drama about the complex friendship and transformative professional relationship between the world-renowned book editor Maxwell Perkins (Firth) — who discovered F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway — and the larger-than-life literary giant Thomas Wolfe (Law).

Perkins collaborated with Wolfe on the first two of his four novels, Look Homeward, Angel and Of Time and the River. Their professional relationship lasted less than a decade, but its impact would resound on both men’s lives until their deaths. The film, based on the biography Max Perkins: Editor of Genius by Pulitzer Prize-winner A. Scott Berg, is rated PG (Parental Guidance Advised for some thematic elements and suggestive content) by Bermuda’s Broadcasting Commissioners.

Screening on the final day of the Rio Olympics at 5.15pm, Olympic Pride, American Prejudice tells the never-before-told story of the 18 courageous African-American athletes who won hearts and medals at the 1936 Games in Berlin.

They represented a country that considered them second-class citizens and, despite their stirring performances, returned home to short-lived glory.

History forgot all but one, the four-time gold medal winner, Jesse Owens. This is the story of the other 17 athletes. Together with Owens, their heroic turn at the Games was a precursor to the civil rights movement.
