The late civil rights activist and labour leader E.F. Gordon is set to be honoured this week by the Roman Catholic Church of Bermuda.

Dr Gordon will posthumously receive the Peace and Social Justice award in a ceremony tomorrow at St Theresa’s Church Hall on Laffan Street.

A physician, parliamentarian and labour leader who was relentless in challenging social and political inequities, Dr Gordon stood up for downtrodden workers and founded the Bermuda Workers Association, which was the forerunner of the Bermuda Industrial Union.

Named a National Hero in 2011, he was described as the father of the labour movement in Bermuda and a fierce opponent of segregation, who pushed for the abolition of the property vote.

Dame Pamela Gordon and Patricia Gordon-Pamplin, the Minister of Home Affairs, are both expected to be there on behalf of their father and will speak for the Gordon family. They will be joined by former leader of the Bermuda Industrial Union Ottiwell Simmons, who will also deliver a speech.

Dr Gordon is the sixth person selected to be honoured by the church’s Peace and Social Justice Committee. In previous years the honour has been bestowed on the Progressive Group, Dr Barbara Ball, Dr Dorothy Thompson, Monsignor Felipe Macedo and Gladys Misick Morrell.
